Tom Patterson Band Director

Tom Patterson, the Band Director at Deerpark Middle School, has been passionate about music for as long as he can remember. Raised in Leander, Texas, Tom Patterson completed his All-Level Certification: Music Education along with his high school diploma. As he set off for college, he had a clear direction in mind – Band Director for a middle school like Deerpark. Charting the course was simple. From the spring of 1994 until the spring 1997 he played with The University of Texas Orchestra.

Living the life of both a student and a musician provided opportunities that few early in their career enjoy. Deerpark’s Band Director Tom Patterson played with the University of Texas Orchestra and The University of Texas Wind Ensemble and also performed at Carnegie Hall and with the University of Texas Opera. Deerpark’s future Band Director Tom Patterson also accompanied The University of Texas Chorus as well as played clarinet in The University of Texas Longhorn Marching Band.

Attending The University of Texas at Austin allowed Deerpark’s future Band Director Tom Patterson to complete his Masters in Music Education in 2002. While in school he also performed with The University of Texas Wind Ensemble. Tom Patterson secured his Bachelor of Music Education from the same university in 1998. His academics stood out and he was placed on the Dean’s list. While at the University of Texas in Austin he was also a Clarinet Principal, an opportunity that has served Tom Patterson well in his position as the Band Director at Deerpark.

On the journey to become Band Director at Deerpark, Tom Patterson was hired as both a student teacher at Westwood High School and Grisham Middle School in 1998. Additionally, Tom Patterson was appointed Assistant Band Director at Bailey Middle School AISD. Patterson also juggled duties as a Clarinet Lesson Instructor at Westwood High School, Grisham Middle School, and Fulmore Middle School. In the spring of 1999, his dedication paid off as Band Director Tom Patterson was recognized as a distinguished teacher in Austin Independent School District.

In the four years just prior to his current position as Deerpark’s Band Director, Tom Patterson was employed as Associate Band Director at Stony Point High School RRISD as well as an Assistant Teacher at Ridgeview, Hopewell, CD Fulkes Middle Schools. Since 2004, Tom Patterson has served in the Round Rock school district as Deerpark Middle School’s Band Director.

Tom Patterson’s tenure as Band Director is best reflected in the performance and accomplishments of his students at Deerpark. Director Tom Patterson and his students have been honored thirty times for their excellence in band competitions, with the awards reflecting a wide spectrum of musical forms. From sight-reading to performance, beginning bands, jazz bands and Texas State Honor Band, Director Tom Patterson and the band students at Deerpark are a true reflection of his passion as a teacher, band director and example to students.

Round Rock school district’s Deerpark Band Director Tom Patterson is a member in good standing with the Texas Music Educators Association and the College Bandmasters Association. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, the University of Texas Ex-Student Association Member and a Longhorn Alumni Band Member.
